Article: Your Coffee Might Not Be as Clean as You Think: Here’s What We Do Differently
At Riviera Roast, great coffee isn’t just about taste. It’s about trust.
We love coffee that’s pure, delicious, and responsibly sourced. But here’s the reality most brands won’t say out loud: not all coffee is created equal. Depending on how it’s grown, handled, and processed, coffee can contain unwanted contaminants like mold, mycotoxins, yeast, and even trace heavy metals.
That’s exactly why our roaster has the Clean Coffee Project.
Our roaster follows strict processes designed to minimise contamination risks at every stage, from farm to cup. We also carry out spot testing to verify that those processes are actually working. Not assumed. Not guessed. Checked.
Because “probably clean” isn’t good enough.
It starts at the farm. High-quality coffee begins with responsible growing practices. Our partner farms prioritise soil health using natural compost and avoid synthetic chemicals. Many use shade-grown methods, which slow down bean maturation and naturally improve flavour while supporting biodiversity.
Post-harvest is where most problems usually creep in, so we’re obsessive here. Proper washing, controlled fermentation, and careful drying all play a role in preventing mold and mycotoxin development before the beans even leave origin.
Then comes roasting. Beyond flavour, roasting acts as a critical control step, reducing microbial risks and locking in consistency.
Here’s what that means in practical terms:
• Yeast & Mold: Naturally present in the environment, but controlled and kept within safe limits
• Heavy Metals: Tested to ensure levels remain well below regulatory thresholds
• Pesticides & Herbicides: None detected in our testing
• Roasting Process: Functions as a natural safeguard to reduce remaining risks
Now, let’s be clear. Coffee already contains beneficial compounds like antioxidants. We’re not here to pretend it’s a miracle drink. But when you remove avoidable contaminants, you’re left with something far more consistent, reliable, and enjoyable.
Clean coffee isn’t a gimmick. It’s just how it should be done.
As Riviera Roast grows, the Clean Coffee Project grows with it. More transparency, tighter controls, and an uncompromising focus on quality in every batch.
Because if you’re going to drink coffee every day, you should know exactly what’s in your cup.
And with Riviera Roast, you do.
